Excessive gingival display—or a “gummy smile,” as it is sometimes known—refers to a condition in which an excessive amount of the upper gum line is revealed when a person smiles. In some cases, surgery is necessary to reduce gingival display. During this procedure, a portion of the upper jaw is removed so that the remaining jaw shifts upward. This upward shift pushes the gum line further up so that less of the gum line is exposed when you smile.
