What Is a Deep Incisor Overbite?

A deep incisor overbite is a malocclusion characterized by a protrusion of the upper front teeth. This condition is common and can be corrected with orthodontic interventions like braces and Invisalign . Left untreated, an overbite can cause speech impediments, difficulty with chewing food, excessive wear on the lower teeth, and jaw problems.

With an overbite, the upper teeth extend out so far that they clamp down over the top of the lower teeth. Excessive eruption of the incisors is also common. Often, this condition is caused by a mismatch in size between the upper and lower jaws. Overbites are sometimes genetic but can also be caused by poor oral health habits, overdevelopment of bones in the mouth, and long-term thumb sucking or pacifier use. Your orthodontist can guide your teeth back into alignment using braces or Invisalign. The best treatment for you and the length of your treatment depend on the severity of your overbite.
