What Is a Palatal Expander?
When people think about orthodontics, their first thought is usually of braces or archwires. However, the field of orthodontics utilizes a number of additional oral appliances in order to expedite treatment.
One such appliance is known as a palatal expander , also known as a rapid palatal expander, orthodontic expander, or rapid maxillary expansion appliance. This upper appliance is attached to the roof of the mouth and applies pressure to the upper jaw by turning a midline screw. Over time, this pressure separates the mid palatal structure, making the jaw wider so that the upper and lower teeth fit together better when biting down. Palatal expanders are often used to correct posterior crossbites as part of or prior to the placement of braces.
